Thangkha painting is an art that developed and evolved over several centuries in Bhutan, and is one of the 13 Zorig Chusum. Thus, thangkhas are culturally significant for Bhutan, and their further development is considered highly important. A group of six young painters under the guidance of a master painter will produce 48 thangkhas combining traditional skills with modern concepts. The Thangkhas will be based on mythologies and histories of Bhutan, and would become national treasures.
Objectives of the project include to:
Enhance the traditional artistry.
Complete and exhibit 48 paintings by the end of 2 years.
Innovate new techniques and produce new themes in painting thangkhas.
Promote new materials and applications of local color sources such as plants and other organic materials.
Outlook
The project will be implemented by the Exclusive Thangkha Painters’ Group (ETPG). The painters will produce one piece of art every three months .
