SDC/Helvetas were requested by the Royal Government of Bhutan to support the physical expansion of the two
Colleges of Education (CoE) in Paro and Samtse to meet the demands for increase in numbers of qualified trained teachers.
The main Objective of the Project is to contribute to the
expansion of teacher capacity in Bhutan (in numbers and quality) by
constructing infrastructure to:
Facilitating the training of more than 900 students at a time in Paro;
Integrate information technology into teacher training (Paro and Samtse);
Support the integration of the educational
research, curriculum development
professional support and teacher
training section at Paro/Samtse.
Main Achievement:
The following buildings at Paro College of Education have been completed:
Construction of computer centre and office building completed;
Renovation (modification) of research centre completed;
Construction of visitors apartment completed;
Renovation (modification) of Science Education Centre completed;
Expansion of football ground completed;
Improvement of water supply, new access road along the sports field completed;
1st part of court yard and main entrance completed;
Award of construction works for the IT and Library buildings in Samtse.
Continuous cooperation between the PCE Paro O + M units and the project team is in progress. The project team also continues to support, guide and supervise the contractors).
Outlook:
The following constructions works will be the future focus:
Completion of auditorium and gymnasium construction works;
Start the modification of the school building 5 library extension;
External work at CoE Paro in progress;
Student hostel under construction to be completed by M arch 2009;
The Learner Resource Centre in Samtse to be completed by March 2009.
