 Kizom Zam Project BH 70

Budget:     CHF 0.14  million (Helvetas and Elysium Foundation)

Partner:    Bumthang Dzongkhag, Tang Gewog

Contact:   District Engineer, Jakar Dzong

Location/Geographic Coverage: Upper Tang (Bumthang)

The construction of a motorable road into Tang valley started in 1983. Since about 20 years the Tang community benefited from this road access. Unfortunately the majority of the house holds of upper Tang (82 house holds) are located on the left side of the Tang river  without direct road access to date. Many house holds have land on both sides of the river. The need for a bridge has increased fast over recent years as the agriculture system is moving from a largely subsistence towards a market oriented system.

Main Achievements:

The bridge was planned by the Department of Roads in connection with a training training on analysis and design of short to medium span reinforced concrete/pre-stressed concrete bridges sponsored by Helvetas (under the SBP program) and the Department of Roads. The contract for constructing the bridge was awarded to Ms Passang Construction in April.

The work was started in June as per contract agreement.

Outlook:

The construction is making good progress. It is expected that the bridge will be completed by June 2010.
