1. Aim and Objectives:
The objectives of the project are to:
§
Contribute to the conservation and promotion of the
traditional craft of embroidering religious tapestry; and
§
Contribute to the cultural significance attached to
the creation and display of a Thongdroel.
2.
Justification:
The art of hand appliquéd and embroidered religious
tapestry has a long tradition in Bhutan. This art is part of the
thirteen traditional arts and crafts that are being revived and
strengthened in the country, including in institutes (Institutes for
Zorig Chusum in Thimphu – the capital, and in Trashiyangtse – in the
east) for vocational training for youths.
Thongdroel, a
religious tapestry, are considered precious assets of Dzongs and
monasteries and are preserved as national treasures. The unfurling of
Thongdroels during auspicious occasions are important cultural
events because the sight of a Thongdroel is believed to liberate
viewers from suffering. In keeping with this tradition, the proponent
and eleven artists have begun working on the biggest, and probably the
most elaborate, Thongdroel to date in the country. The creation
of the Thongdroel was begun with financial contributions from the
proponent and private donations. However, the magnitude of the project
has made it necessary to seek further contributions from organizations
and private individuals. The project is expected to be complete by 2008.
3. Implementation:
The proponent and the artists already involved shall
continue to implement the project. Helvetas/SDC Coordination Office
shall release the committed amount upon signing of this document.
4. Monitoring:
Helvetas/SDC Coordination Office shall monitor the
project. |
