Remote schools in Samtse
and Zhemgang district
A major challenge in the education sector in Bhutan is reaching remote and scattered settlements in rural Bhutan. To mitigate this, about 250 community primary schools have been set up for a specific community. In certain places, extended classrooms have been set up in existing facilities and attached to a parent school further away. Another strategy has been setting up boarding facilities. In remote schools, the cost of delivery of basic services like improved water sources, sanitation facilities and lighting are very high owing to the inaccessibility of these places.
Objectives
The main objective of the project is to complement the activities of the MoE towards improving the quality of basic education by improving the teaching and learning environment.
The project combines support for three basic services - sanitation, lighting, library resources
Activities
The project will set up solar lighting facilities for 5 schools, 3 extended classrooms, and one non-formal education center in two very remote corners of Bhutan.
A smaller provision has been kept for library resources for the extended classrooms and basic sanitation facilities
