On 8th April, 2010, the GNH Commission and Helvetas signed an agreement on “Preserving and Leveraging Bhutan’s Unique Cultural Diversity”.

The project expects to follow a two-pronged strategy: to contribute towards the preservation of traditional diversities through anthropological studies, documentation, and exchanges; and to explore ways of promoting cultural diversity for income generation.

Local ownership will be of paramount importance in the planning and execution of the project activities and local participation will be given high priority not only for activities focusing on income generation but also for documentation and preservation the tangible and intangible culture and traditions.

The project is jointly financed by the European Union under the theme “Investing in People – Access to local culture, protection and promotion of cultural diversity” and Helvetas, with a total sum of over 39 million Ngultrums. The main project partners will be the communities where the project activities will be implemented, Department of Culture, the Tourism Council of Bhutan, and Tarayana Foundation.
