An Education workshop on Archaeology (28th March - 1st April 2011)

An Educational Workshop on Archaeology was organized as part of Phase II of the “Bhutan-Swiss archaeology project” between the Department of Culture, Bhutan, and SLSA, Switzerland. The workshop was formally opened on 27th March 2011 by Lyonpo Minjur Dorji, Minister, Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs at the Royal Academy for Performing Arts. Also present were Lyonpo Pema Gyamtsho, Minister, Ministry of Agriculture and Forests, Lyonpo Dorji Wangdi, Minister, Ministry of Labour & Human Resources, and the Secretary of the MoHCA.

 

The workshop started with expert inputs and discussions in Thimphu, followed by a field trip to the ruins of the Drapham Dzong archaeological excavation site in Bumthang to show an overview into how the excavation was carried out. The workshop covered topics such as management set-up, legal aspects of archaeology and public relation and education. Participants at the workshop included the Director General, Department of Culture, Dzongdas, Cultural Officers from all the 20 districts, researchers, representatives from the media, and other relevant stakeholders. 

The workshop was organized by the Division for Conservation of Architectural Heritage, Department of Culture, and Helvetas with resource persons from the University of Zurich, Department of Archaeology, City of Zurich, and the Rietburg Museum. It was financed by SLSA.
